    | 1. Combine sugar, sifted flour, baking powder, and salt. | 2. Rub in butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. | 3. Press half the mixture into a well greased 8x8" square pan. | 4. Dissolve baking soda in milk, add egg and nutmeg and pour over remaining sugar and flour mixture. | 5. Mix well, then spoon into pan on top of pressed in mixture. | 6. Sprinkle walnuts over. | 7.
