    | 1. Cut the tortillas into 1/2-inch strips; place strips on an ungreased baking sheet. | 2. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until crisp; transfer to a wire rack to cool. | 3. Saute the garlic and onion in hot oil in a large pot over medium-high heat until tender. | 4. Add 2/3 of the tortilla strips, tomato, and the next 6 ingredients; bring to a boil. | 5. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes. | 6. Remove and throw away the bay leaves; cool soup slightly. | 7. Process the soup in batches in either a blender or a food processor until smooth. | 8. Return soup to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until well heated. Stir in salt and pepper (add to taste). | 9.
